Moon & Stars Watermelon Seeds (Citrullus lanatus) – 20+ Non-GMO Heirloom Seeds for Planting, Dark Rinds Speckled with “Stars” & Sweet Red Flesh, by Isla’s Garden Seeds, Gift Idea for Gardeners

Moon & Stars Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is a beloved heirloom famous for its dramatic, dark-green rinds sprinkled with tiny yellow “stars” and one or more larger “moons.” Inside, the fruit reveals deep red, juicy flesh with classic summertime sweetness and a pleasantly crisp bite.

Vigorous vines sprawl widely and set round to slightly oblong fruits typically in the 10–20 lb range under good conditions. The striking foliage often shows the same constellation-like speckles as the rinds, making plants as ornamental as they are delicious.

Harvest when the nearest tendril to the fruit turns brown, the ground spot turns creamy, and the rind resists a thumbnail press. Chill well before slicing for peak flavor—perfect for picnics, fruit salads, and refreshing summer desserts.

Distinctive, productive, and full of old-fashioned charm, Moon & Stars brings showpiece beauty and superb flavor to warm-season gardens.

Sow outdoors after all danger of frost when soil is warm (70–85°F), or start indoors 2–3 weeks early in biodegradable cells to avoid root disturbance. Choose a sunny site with very well-draining, fertile soil—raised mounds help warm the root zone.

Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep, 2–3 seeds per hill; thin to the strongest plant. Space hills 3–4 feet apart in rows 6–8 feet apart. Water deeply and consistently—avoid overhead watering late in the day. Mulch to maintain even moisture and suppress weeds.

Encourage pollinators by planting nearby flowers; fruit set improves with regular bee activity. Reduce watering slightly as fruits near maturity to concentrate sweetness. Harvest using the tendril/ground-spot cues for best flavor and texture.
