Celery requires a long growing season and cool weather. It will not grow well in high heat. It needs consistant, frequent watering. Celery that doesn't get enough water becomes tough and stringy.
Start seeds indoors so the celery has adequate time to grow. Plant seeds 10-12 weeks before the last frost. To reduce germination time, soak the seeds in warm water overnight before planting. Press the seeds into the soil instead of burying them.
Once the seeds have reached 2" tall, they can be transplanted to larger pots. When the outdoor soil temperature is above 50F, the plants can be transplanted in the garden. Plant them 8-10 inches apart.
The plants will need regular, consistent water throughout the growing season. Tie the stalks together with twine while they are growing to prevent them from sprawling. This is how the tight bunches are created.
