Brassica oleracea var. italica "Calabrese"
An import from Italy in the late 1800's, this broccoli produces 5” dark green heads. Many more side shoots will grow after the central head is cut. For the broccoli lovers, this classic variety is a throw-back to robust, deep broccoli flavor.

A cold-season vegetable, broccoli should be planted outside as soon as the ground can be worked. It can be direct seeded or transplanted 2-3 weeks before the last frost. Many people start them indoors 4-6 weeks beforehand so they will be ready to harvest in the summer.
Once it gets really hot out, the plants will bolt and stop producing. The goal is to have broccoli reach maturity before the heat of summer sets in.
Warmer climates should do plantings 85-100 days before the first frost of fall so the plants will be growing in cooler weather. This usually means planting in mid summer.
Sow the seeds 1/4-1/2” deep and 12-24” apart. Rows should be 36” apart. Plant broccoli in full sun or the plant may become leggy and produce small heads.
After harvesting the main head, continue to check the plant for side-shoots to harvest. It may produce for months.
