Zucchini and summer squash do not transplant well so it is best to direct sow. They have a short growing season so this isn't an issue in most climates. Wait to plant until the soil temperature is above 60F. If you have a short season, it is possible, but not ideal, to start seeds indoors 2-4 weeks before the last frost.
Plant squash in full sun. They are wide bush-like plants that need space so make sure there is 2-3 feet between each plant. Sow seeds 1” deep.
Frequent and consistent watering is important – at least 1” per week. Once the plants start producing fruit, check every day for harvest as it grows fast and furious. Harvest squash while young – once it gets big it loses flavor and gets overly seedy.
