Cucumbers can be vining or bush types. Bush varieties are great for growing in containers. Vining varieties are perfect for trellises on decks and patios.

Start cucumbers indoors 3 weeks before the expected last frost. They are very susceptible to the cold so do not plant seeds outdoors until the soil is 70F. Only transplant starts when all danger of frost is gone. Two weeks after the last frost is the best time.

Sow seeds 1" deep and 2-3' apart in rows 1-2' apart. Vine varieties that are going to be trellised can be planted at the base of the trellis in mounds 1-2' apart. Put 2-3 seeds in each mound. Vines can get quite long and need to be handled carefully because the roots are shallow. Set up the trellis before planting and weed gently so as not to disturb roots. Cucumbers must be planted in full sun.

Water plants consistently and frequently, 1-2" per week. If watering is inconsistent or not enough, the fruit will be bitter. Pick cucumbers every few days during peak harvest – they grow fast and will produce lots if they are consistently harvested.
